On this day in 1994, the ninth day of genocide in Rwanda, the New York Times reported the shooting and hacking to death of some 1,000 civilians in a church where they had sought refuge. At this point, the death toll was estimated at 72,000. The final death toll of the Rwandan genocide, which ended in July 1994, has been estimated at 800,000. This type of violence—with no safe havens—occurred all too often. Sites of the massacres have been turned into memorials or back into churches, and the families of victims have tried to recover as efforts to stop genocide in Africa continue.
After the genocide in Rwanda, the U.N. promised “never again.” Well, it’s happen again. Hey, U.N., heard of Darfur?
